Where To Start?
Sunday, April 19th, 2009I get asked by a lot of people - Where do I start getting a tattoo?
Start by visiting a few tattoo shops, look through their books and designs. All good tattoo artists would be able to draft out a design and turn it into a “flash”. A flash is the term for a design that is made to be turned into a tattoo. It will cost you extra to have a tattoo artist create the design, so if you have any friends that are good artists, that would help keep costs down.
Ask around your friends for inspiration and check out good tattoo sites. Two of my personal faves are Chopper Tattoo and Tattoo Me Now.
Find out which shops do the best work, see how much they would charge. Cheaper is not always better, the best way is to look through the books of their completed work and decide if you like their style. Some artists do portraits really well, some do symbols and diagrams better. Some are really good with black ink and others with full colour. In most places, shops are licensed, but always find one that looks clean.
You may be able to walk right in and get it done straight away but if it’s more complicated, you may have to make an appointment.
The most important thing is, once you have a design down on paper, think about it for awhile. Where do you want it? How big? Then sit on that idea for awhile, at least a couple months, then decide if it still sounds like a good idea. When you get one, you’ll want another one - its true what they say: They’re addictive! In a good way.
Peace
Jonny
